Christmas in the Park and Gilmore Dance Troop

Lacey and I went to 'Christmas in the Park' yesterday. Lacey is a member of the Gilmore Dance Troop and they were performing for 'Christmas in the Park'. I had never been and was pleasantly surprised. The lights are beautiful. There is a fire pit to roast marshmallows. The half mile hike is decorated with lights of all types. They even have a family movie playing in the park. We had a great time in spite of the frosty cold. Lacey performed with her troop and they did a great job. I want to thank Ms. April for working with them! After the performance Lacey and I had some hot chocolate (much needed to warm up) and of course it would not have been complete without a funnel cake. If you have never been, this is a wonderful family opportunity. Admission is $10 per car. You can drive in and park and walk the trail. It is accessible for wheelchairs along the trail and from what I could see it would be accessible on the grassy areas as well. The kickoff event is Friday, December 12, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. with special guests and a lighting of the trees. We are going back to Christmas in the Park as a family making it part of our Christmas season celebration.

Patriot 14 Opens in Fayetteville North Carolina

Patriot 14

Nancy attended opening night for Fayetteville's newest movie theater. Welcome to the beautiful IMAX Screen! It is a wonderful addition to Fayetteville's entertainment options. The Patriot 14 is located at 4761 Valley Gate Drive. Turn onto Valley Gate Drive by the newly remodeled Golden Coral. The Patriot 14 is on the left. The Patriot 14 name is suitable for Fayetteville's motto of 'History, Heroes and Hometown Feeling". Nancy met Erik Horn the assistant manager and inquired about job openings and hiring. Mr. Horn shared the Patriot 14 already employs a person with a disability and is eager to consider other candidates. So congratulations to the Patriot 14 for not only being a beautiful theater, but for demonstrating progressive leadership to the community! Other networking opportunities included meeting Erika Taylor, the events and volunteer coordinator for the Partnership for Children. Nancy and Erika discussed volunteer opportunities and possibly an internship for one of the people served by Kaleo Supports. Erika reported a volunteer job opening in the IT department entering work orders. Nancy also took the opportunity to tell Erika about our Kids on the Block Puppets and possible opportunities for the Kids on the Block Puppets to participate in the Partnership for Children's marketing activities. Nancy also took opportunity to speak with Senator Wesley Meredith. Nancy shared with him some concerns about how funding changes could have a negative impact on people with disabilities (intellectual and developmental disabilities). Senator Meredith provided Nancy with a number to call and he accepted Nancy's card with an encouragement to call if he had questions about disabilities. Why does all this matter to you? Every networking opportunity usually leads somewhere. Kaleo Supports takes every opportunity to network in the hopes of finding competitive employment for people with disabilities or opportunities to improve their quality of life! With that said, it was a good day to network and welcome the Patriot 14!

Kids on the Block Puppets

We are excited to announce we will be sponsoring the Kids on the Block Puppets. The Kids on the Block were created in 1978 to help educate children about disabilities. There are a number of different educational programs and Kaleo Supports will be offering puppets shows on Down Syndrome (intellectual disabilities), Cerebral Palsy and Autism (developmental disabilities). The shows will be free to the public and can be scheduled by contacting Kaleo Supports.

Our first puppet show will be on November 15, 2014 at the Kidtopia event hosted by the Fayetteville Observer. The event is from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Crown's Expo Center. The event is free to the public. Please check the schedule for show time. Ellen Jane Peterson and Brenda Dubrowski will be educating the audience on Down Syndrome.

We are excited to offer this as a community service.

Kidtopia - Assisting Families of Children with Special Needs

We participated in the Fayetteville Observer's Kidtopia on November 15, 2014 at the Crown Agro Expo Center. Kaleo Supports offered a Thanksgiving craft and several sensory activities. Handouts were provided to families on sensory integration disorders. Nancy made arrangements to meet privately with four families to answer their questions regarding services available to them. The event was a huge success and families indicated they enjoyed the event! The picture is of adults dancing on stage competing with the children on who could dance the best! Of course the children won!
